Course Description
Interdisciplinary course with a focus on stop motion animation. Illustration, photography, graphic design, animation, and hybrid majors will apply their existing skills towards the creation of short-form works using a multi-plane setup. The course is a balanced mix of theory and practice, with detailed instruction on montage, efficient storytelling, animation techniques, and the complete production pipeline. Students will complete projects for both commercial and entertainment applications. A playful, experimental approach is encouraged as students learn the foundational principles of motion design. This course has no prerequisites.

Students will learn to apply foundational theories such as montage and semiotics to create cleverly executed visual narratives.

Students will work in interdisciplinary groups, building skills in collaboration and producing complex stop-motion works with more efficiency and creativity than can be done in isolation.

Students will become more agile when working with a wide variety of physical and digital tools. Students will work with set equipment, cameras and lights, puppet construction, physical and digital image-making, film editing, sound capture, post-production effects, etc.

Students will learn to communicate their ideas to audiences at key stages in the production pipeline. Writing and speaking skills will develop as students learn to present to clients in a professional context.
