Analog Motion
Course Description
Interdisciplinary course with a focus on stop motion animation. Illustration, photography, graphic design, animation, and hybrid majors will apply their existing skills towards the creation of short-form works using a multi-plane setup. The course is a balanced mix of theory and practice, with detailed instruction on montage, efficient storytelling, animation techniques, and the complete production pipeline. Students will complete projects for both commercial and entertainment applications. A playful, experimental approach is encouraged as students learn the foundational principles of motion design. This course has no prerequisites.

Motion design is rooted in the belief that movement is a fundamental mode of meaning-making. As with composition, form, and color, you'll learn to use time as a primary expressive element.

Learning Outcome
You'll learn how principles such as easing, anticipation, and pose-to-pose translate to an analog process. You'll engage with all aspects of the stop-motion pipeline, from concept to final cut.

You'll stretch beyond the boundaries of your major to acquire fundamental competency in adjacent disciplines. Instruction in lighting, image capture, character design and construction, rotoscoping, and other skills will be provided.
